Title: Nebraska Livestock Producer Environmental Assistance Project

Authors: Chris Henry and Jason Gross, University of Nebraska

Summary:

The Animal Feeding Operation project provides financial and technical assistance to small livestock producers who are concerned about preserving the environment but are exempt from current regulatory requirements. The purpose of this project is to construct on-farm demonstration sites that minimize environmental risk using new concepts and technologies. Completed projects include constructed wetlands, clean water diversions, vegetative treatment areas, low water stream crossings for cattle, lagoon abandonment, cost effective pumping stations, sprinkler treatment areas, side roll treatment areas, infiltration treatment areas, tree filters, fresh water lagoon conversions, and manure marketing projects.

This project provides cost share for small livestock producers across Nebraska, the only source of funding, for these voluntary best management practices. An adequate number and diversity of projects is needed to make these common, economical, and mainstream practices. The project provides practical and innovative solutions to small livestock producers in rural Nebraska.
