Title: Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation Self Assessment

Authors: Rick Koelsch and Joe Lally, Heartland Animal Manure Management Group

Summary:

Each concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) is responsible for complying with the conditions of its permit and for following its nutrient management plan. This fact sheet provides a quick guide producers can use to identify areas of their operation that may need attention to avoid noncompliance. However, this is a general guide and cannot be used alone to accurately determine compliance. State requirements may be more stringent than the federal requirement. Your operation's requirements are spelled out in your permit and it is against those requirements that the state and EPA will inspect your operation and evaluate your compliance.
