Vegetative Filter Strip Systems for Animal Feeding Operations
Title:
Vegetative Filter Strip Systems for Animal Feeding Operations
Authors:
Joseph P. Harner, James P. Murphy, Daniel L. Devlin, Walter H. Fick, Gary L. Kilgore
Summary:
Vegetative filter strips, in conjunction with sediment basins, are recognized by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) as an effective system for controlling and reducing nutrient runoff into surface water from confined feeding operations. Only feeding operations with fewer than 1,000 animal units can utilize this type of waste management system. Also, the use of a “discharging” filter system may not be aviable option in a watershed where water quality in the receiving water body is impaired by nutrients or fecal coliform bacteria. In these cases, total retention may be the only alternative.
