Vegetative Filter Strips for Open Feedlot Runoff Treatment
Title:
Vegetative Filter Strips for Open Feedlot Runoff Treatment
Authors:
Jeffrey C. Lorimor, Shawn Shouse, Wendy Miller, Iowa State University
Summary:
Vegetative Filter Strips (VFS) can be used to minimize nutrients and solids in feedlot runoff. VFS remove up to 60 to 70 percent of suspended solids and up to 70 to 80 percent of phosphorus, nitrogen, and chemical oxygen demand. Proper VFS design and management can improve the effectiveness of nutrient and solids removal.
